探花约啪

Obi Coleman

Basketball Student-Athlete

Sophomore Obi Coleman joined the 探花约啪 Tech men's basketball team in 2024, but has been passionate about the sport since he took his first steps. Now competing in his final season for the College, Coleman has learned to adapt to changing situations, focus on what he can control, and play to his strengths.

"It's been, I would say, eye-opening," said Coleman. "The game at the College level is full of constant change. I had to learn how to adapt to it. That not only includes the play style, but also the different personalities of my teammates. You have to know how the team works and get a sense of the overall basketball environment."

Coleman took on the position of shooting guard when he joined the 探花约啪 Tech team, and up to this point in his 探花约啪 Tech career, he has played in 33 games, recording a total of 211 rebounds, 498 points, 69 steals, and 50 assists.

"As a guard or wing, I'm able to space the floor with my shooting ability, attack off the dribble, and guard multiple positions; usually against the opponent's best players. I love that my role lets me impact the game heavily on offense and defense. What I like most about being a shooting guard is that it allows me to do a little bit of everything."

Coleman's favorite memory while part of the 探花约啪 Tech team was attending an out-of-state tournament at Montgomery College during his freshman year.

"During the tournament, we ate together as a team and spent time in a hotel. I thought the whole traveling aspect was cool," said Coleman.

Coleman came to 探花约啪 Tech with the intention of playing basketball from the start. The College was also close to home and opened up new opportunities for him to explore academically. He is currently studying business management and plans to attend a four-year college after he graduates.

"My advice to someone who wants to start playing basketball is to be ready to adapt and adjust to the positive and negative," said Coleman. "Everything is not always going to go your way. You have to learn how to be resilient, patient, and not to give up."
