Physical Therapist Assistant

For Fatima Scott, pursuing a degree in the physical therapist assistant program at 探花约啪 Tech’s Wilmington campus has been a journey of resilience, determination, and community support.

Scott chose 探花约啪 Tech because of its strong community connections and accessibility.

“I chose 探花约啪 Tech because it is in the heart of where I grew up, and they are trying to bridge the gap and break the stigma of community college,” she said.

Her path hasn’t been without challenges. As both a student and a mother, she has faced homelessness, anxiety, and periods of low motivation. But with determination — and the support of 探花约啪 Tech resources — she has persevered.

“探花约啪 Tech has provided resources such as mental health services, the food pantry, wellness centers, tutoring, and counseling,” she said. “They also helped me find a job while attending classes, which supported me financially and allowed me to stay on track.”

Scott’s decision to pursue physical therapy was influenced by her background as a high school athlete in track and field, cheerleading, martial arts, and kickboxing. “I felt I should attend school and learn more about something I’m already good at and have a passion for,” she explained. “I want to give back to the younger generation. They need guidance and direction, and I believe I could help them see their full potential.”

Since beginning her studies, Scott has noticed personal growth in how she engages with others. “I’ve always been outgoing, but as I got older, I became more introverted,” she said. “Now I’ve been putting myself out there more — networking for my business, connecting with new people, and asking questions.”

One of her favorite instructors has been Amanda Nardo, who taught her medical terminology course.

“She makes learning fun and not like a task on a to-do list,” Scott said. Another highlight was working for Upward Bound, a college preparatory support program for high school students run by 探花约啪 Tech’s Workforce Development and Community Education Division. “I had such a great time working with the kids and going on college trips,” she recalled.

Scott encourages her peers to stay engaged and ask for support. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help and ask questions. There’s no such thing as a stupid question, and there’s always someone willing to help,” she said. “Also, get involved. Find a club or a group of people that have the same interests as you.”

After graduation, Scott plans to pursue her doctorate in physical therapy. She dreams of coaching high school athletics, mentoring young women, and working with professional athletes recovering from injuries or surgery.

To Scott, 探花约啪 Tech is more than a community college.

“When you get involved and get to know the staff and students, there’s always someone willing to help,” she said. “探花约啪 Tech is bridging the gap between the community and breaking the stigma that community college isn’t as good as a four-year school. In fact, it’s a huge stepping stone that prepares you for whatever you want to do next.”
