Patient Care Technician

Certificate Program

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital members of the healthcare team, providing direct patient care and support in clinical settings. This program prepares students with the fundamental knowledge and hands-on skills needed to assist patients in hospital environments under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) or other licensed medical staff.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the Patient Care Technician certification exam offered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA).

Internship/clinical experience is included; hours and locations may vary from the course schedule. Prerequisites are required. Please contact your preferred campus for more information.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

1. Apply the necessary knowledge and skills to provide individualized basic care to a diverse population of patients in healthcare settings.
   1. Safely and effectively perform patient care technician clinical skills.
      1. Properly identify patients.
      2. Outline safety precautions in basic patient care.
      3. Demonstrate competency in basic nursing care procedures, including activities of daily living.
      4. Demonstrate correct procedure when assisting a patient with nutrition and feeding needs.
      5. Demonstrate competency in phlebotomy procedures.
      6. Demonstrate competency in performing EKG patient preparation and testing.
      7. Perform and record fasting and non-fasting blood glucose via glucometer – capillary puncture.
      8. Accurately obtain and record intake and output data.
      9. Demonstrate proper technique for assisting with urinary and bowel elimination.
      10. Perform removal of indwelling urinary catheter.
      11. Perform urine specimen collection via indwelling catheter.
      12. Perform IV catheter removal.
      13. Identify normal values for clinical measurement of temperature, pulse respiration, oxygen saturation and blood pressure.
      14. Perform accurate vital sign assessments.
      15. Perform pulse oximetry.
      16. Demonstrate accurate pain assessment and documentation of pain level.
      17. Demonstrate how to appropriately measure height and weight.
      18. Perform post-catheter bladder scanning.
      19. Assist the nurse with basic patient care.
      20. Demonstrate understanding of care measures for the hospital patient including those with IVs, NG tubes and feeding tubes.
      21. Prepare a patient for procedures and/or treatment.
      22. Recognize and respond to emergencies.
      23. Perform proper CPR and basic life support measures.
      24. Properly collect specimens for laboratory testing.
   2. Explain the role of the patient care provider in delivering culturally sensitive care to a diverse population.
   3. Summarize key strategies in providing culturally sensitive patient care to a diverse population.
   4. Define the terms professional and professionalism.
   5. Discuss the characteristics that health care providers demonstrate to promote professionalism.
   6. Demonstrate professionalism in the role of patient care technician.
   7. Effectively function in the role of the patient care tech when providing care to special populations.
2. Apply principles of infection control in the healthcare setting.
   1. Identify the most common bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
   2. Describe the use of universal precautions and isolation procedures that include the precautions for blood, body fluids, and respiratory secretions.
   3. Describe sources and modes for transmission of infections and diseases, including infectious sources and transmission modes.
   4. Demonstrate proper hand hygiene.
   5. Demonstrate proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment.
3. Use effective communication in interactions with patients and members of the healthcare team, in a variety of health care settings.
   1. Communicate (verbally and nonverbally) effectively and appropriately in interactions with patients and as a member of the health care team.
   2. Discuss techniques to promote effective communication with patients and members of the healthcare team.
   3. Describe basic guidelines for patient charting.
4. Apply legal guidelines as required in a variety of health care settings
